With support from Puget Sound Energy (PSE), Washington United Migrant has trained six migrant community leaders to guide other families in accessing energy assistance and discount programs.

This effort seeks to empower those who have experienced barriers firsthand, transforming them into sources of support and trusted information within their own communities.

Why Talk About Energy Access?

Energy costs remain a heavy burden for many migrant families, especially those facing unstable employment or living in inefficient housing. In many cases, information about available assistance is not in Spanish or doesn’t reach the spaces where the community is present.

Ensuring equitable access to energy is also about promoting social justice and family wellbeing.

What Are We Doing?

In collaboration with PSE, we trained a group of migrant women to serve as community guides on energy-related support. These leaders share clear information in Spanish and offer culturally relevant guidance, helping families overcome language, knowledge, and trust barriers. Through their leadership, access becomes more human, reliable, and possible.

What Impact Are We Seeking?

Thanks to these leaders, many families will access benefits they previously didn’t know about—or felt afraid to request. Knowledge multiplies when it’s rooted in community. This peer-to-peer support network is a powerful tool for saving money, building dignity, and fostering empowerment.

A Message from WUM

We are deeply grateful to Puget Sound Energy for supporting this peer-led training model.

At Washington United Migrant, we believe energy access should not only be possible—it should be understandable, fair, and supported. Migrant to migrant.
